Abstract

Friction experiments under conditions typical for gear synchronization were conducted. The surface compositions of tribological layers caused by the wear process were studied using ToF-SIMS. Commercial gear oil was used as lubricant, which contains zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZDDP) and calcium sulfonate acting as AW/EP additive or as detergent, respectively. Sulfonate molecules fragmented under stress, which led to lower signal intensities. Stress enhanced the attachment of ZDDP molecules to the surface, leading to higher ZDDP intensities. The growth of a tribological layer by the stress resulted in a lower iron signal. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the Proceedings of World Tribology Conference (Kyoto, Japan 9/6-11/2009).
