Influence of surface structures on the operational behavior of continuously variable transmissions

Abstract

Continuously variable transmissions allow for operating combustion engines and eventually also electric traction motors in vehicles always at the optimum point of operation without interruption of the power flow by gear shifting. A disadvantage in comparison with mechanical transmissions based on interlocking of gears with a fixed number of transmission ratios is the lower efficiency. A significant proportion of the additional losses occur due to sliding of the belt or the chain in the torque converter and there is additional power required for the hydraulic generation of the clamping forces necessary for power transmission by friction.
