- Abstract
The compositions of boundary layers were studied within the elastohydrodynamic contact regions of tribological tested high-speed rolling element bearings. The tribological tests were performed with 6 different model lubricants (lithium soap greases). In 5 cases, primary antioxidants were added to the composition of a base lubricant to study their influence on the tribological system used. The grease service lives of 3 model lubricants showed unexpected high values and compared favorably with those of commercial standard lithium soap greases although only one additive type was used to improve the lubricant properties. The composition of the boundary layers in the raceway was influenced by the lubricant additive formulation used in the tribological tests. Low 56Fe+/C4H8 + ratios, low Fe/C ratios and high values of adsorbed and incorporated lubricant portions correlated with high lubricant service lives, whereas high oxygen incorporation was correlated to low lubricant service lives. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the Proceedings of World Tribology Conference (Kyoto, Japan 9/6-11/2009).
