Abstract

The complex sealing contact conditions of multiple-lip reciprocating seals were investigated. Three complementary methods were applied and shown to produce consistent results. Forces and pressures can be calculated with different finite element approaches as well as measured with the radial force meter. The resulting geometry of the seal contours and the fluid film can be observed by optical methods using ultraviolet (UV)-induced fluorescence. It was demonstrated that the transparent counterface does not impair the tribological characteristics of the friction contacts if its roughness was similar to the original surface.
