Bearings

  • Boundary layer functionalization by deformation-induced martensite on ball bearing rings
The aim of this research project is the targeted use of forming-induced phase transformation in the surface layer of complex solid-formed components made of metastable austenitic steels, using the example of a rolling bearing inner ring. The forming process is intended to selectively influence the material properties in the near-surface region and thus optimize the component properties. These component properties in the form of residual stresses have a positive influence on the fatigue life of rolling contacts. In particular, further knowledge is required on local strain hardening and martensitic phase transformation in the area of the boundary layer, in both the manufacturing and service life phases.
